Open vs Closed Pod Vapes: What’s the Best Vape Pod System?

This article was written by Rachel Jackson | Published: January 7, 2025 | Last updated: January 7, 2025

Known for their simplistic design and uncomplicated functionality, pod vapes are a convenient introductory kit for beginners and a highly reliable on-the-go kit for advanced vapers.

Choosing a pod vape kit is easy, and it all starts with choosing your preferred vape pod system: open or closed. Here’s what you need to know about the two different pod systems.

TL;DR: pod vapes are available in two varieties: closed system and open system. The main difference between the two is the refilling method – closed system pod vapes use prefilled pods, whereas open system pod vapes can be refilled with an e-liquid of choice. For this reason, new vapers often opt for the simplicity and convenience of a closed pod vape.

How Do Pod Vapes Work?

Not unlike other e-cigarettes, pod vapes use a battery-powered heating device to deliver a vapour containing nicotine.

Each pod contains e-liquid and a coil. The coil is responsible for heating the e-liquid into an inhalable vapor that mimics the experience of smoking a conventional cigarette without many of the harmful chemicals.

This is where pod vape systems come in. The type of system refers to the method of refilling: open pod system vapes can be opened and refilled with a suitable e-liquid whereas closed pod system vapes are sealed and must be replaced after use.

The Different Vape Pod Systems

Closed Vape Systems

Closed pod vapes use sealed pods that contain the exact e-liquid formulation and coil resistance needed to match the device’s exact settings

A closed vape system delivers the ideal combination of vapour and flavour without any technical know-how – simply slot the pod onto the device and start vaping.

Once depleted, each pod should be disposed of and replaced with a new one.

Open Vape Systems

Open pod vape systems utilise refillable pods that can be topped up with e-liquids. Refillable pods are typically compatible with a range of different coils.

For this reason, open pods provide more control over the vaping experience, allowing vapers to experiment with different e-liquid flavours and formulations.

The exception to this rule is open system pods which incorporate built-in pods. In this case, each pod can be refilled with liquid, but the entire pod needs to be replaced when the flavour starts to deteriorate. Vapers using pods with replaceable coils can simply switch out the coil and continue vaping.

About Ceramic Coils

There are two main types of vape coil: mesh and ceramic. Mesh is the most used in vape kits. Though mesh coils perform adequately, they are widely considered to be inferior to ceramic coils as they cannot withstand the same temperatures. Their inability to tolerate high temperatures is the most common cause of many vape-related complaints including spit back, dry hits and liquid leakage.

In contrast, ceramic coils can withstand significantly high temperatures without burning. This means that ceramic coils can heat e-liquids at much hotter temperatures to create a smooth vapour without dry hits or spit back. Ceramic coils are also more airtight, which means they are significantly less prone to leaking.

Unfortunately, ceramic coils are not often used in vape kits due to their high cost. The OK Pod is one of the only pod vapes to utilise a ceramic coil.

OK Refill Pods are prefilled with 50/50 e-liquid to deliver the ideal balance of flavour and vapour. They are available in six different flavours: Golden Tobacco, Menthol, Berry Mint, Blackcurrant, Srawberry and Mint Cream. Each flavour is available in nicotine strengths of 18mg and 12mg to support ex-smokers in gradually reducing their nicotine intake over time.

The OK Pod also boasts a premium shell with a soft-touch matte finish that has both aesthetic and practical functions – not only is it comfortable to hold, but it’s also capable of withstanding heavy usage.

Overall, the OK Pod is a high-performance pod kit that is perfectly suited to new and advanced vapers.
